he Town of Norfolk is a semi-rural, suburban community located on an upper valley of the Charles River. According to the 2000 U.S. Census, Norfolk has 10,460 residents in 2,818 households. The town which was incorporated in 1870 is now governed through a Board of Selectmen, a Town Administrator and Open Town Meetings as well as other Boards and Committees. The day to day operations are administered by the Town Administrator, who is a town employee. Residents help set policy and the direction of local government by volunteering to sit on elected and/or appointed boards and committees and by participating at Town Meetings.
The newly designed town center features two “round-abouts” for efficient traffic flow, all underground utilities and beautiful colonial post street lighting. Recent improvements include our Town Hill & Gazebo, a modern Town Hall building and a new 23,000 sq ft library. The Town Commons site , which is adjacent to the Town Hall, is in the planning stage for future development with a new Stop and Shop and Walgreens Pharmacy.
Norfolk has excellent access to rail, air and highway facilities. The region’s three major airports in Boston, Providence and Worcester are all within an hour’s driving time. State Routes 1 and 1A, and Interstate Routes 495 and 95 are all within 15 minutes driving time. Commuter rail service is available in the town center to South Station, Back Bay and Boston. There are nearly 500 MBTA parking spaces and the travel time by train to Boston is 40-45 minutes.
The Town of Norfolk has three churches: the Federated Church which is interdenominational and located at the center of town, the Emmanuel Baptist Church on Route 115 and St Jude’s Catholic Church on Main Street.
